Help us buy textbooks  . . .
. . . for Zambian schools

It is difficult to imagine what it is like trying to teach a class 60 or 70 kids with just a handful of old tattered and out of date textbooks.  But, in many of the schools surrounding Mfuwe this is what most teachers do every day.

A 2005 Danida Aide Memoire noted that: "Most Secondary Schools had very poor supplies of essential textbooks and often the only available subject textbook was a copy held by the teacher".

Mrs Tasila Tonga Mwale, Headmistress of Kakumbi Basic School, explained that at her school there is an average of just one textbook for every seven children.

Many schools in Zambia, like others across Southern Africa, use textbooks published by Longman Books.  Researched and written in each specific counrty, they are authentic and relevant. They are based on the latest Zambian syllabus and Project Luangwa can order them from Longman's office in Luskaka.  Longman also distributes the UNICEF Girl-child Education Program, Sara) which covers life skills development and HIV/AIDS awareness education as well as the Breakthrough to Literacy Series in local languages.

Project Luangwa makes it possible for you to buy the most suitable books to help educate Zambian children.  Working closely with schools, when we get enough donations for a full set of books we ask the school which books they need most. We then order them from Lusaka.

Costs:
Each textbook costs around $6 and the teacher's guide $7. Ideally we would like to buy 30 textbooks per subject per class, plus a teacher's guide.  Our aim is to eventually achieve a book to pupil ratio of 1:2.

You can help us by donating anything from the price of just one book to a whole set. As soon as we have enough money for a full set we consult the teachers about their most immediate needs and place an order.

What you need to do:
1: Decide how many books you want to fund and donate the appropriate amount of money via the our donation page.
2: Send us a letter or email and tell us how you want your donation used - in this case textbooks. We guarantee that money donated for specific purposes will be used as specified by the donor.
3: Wait for an email from us confirming the donation and your instructions. We write to everyone who is kind enough to help us.
