"We came as strangers but we are leaving feeling as though we are part of a family".  Steve Eager and Sarah Kennedy - Hampshire, England

Kafunta Safaris is owned and run by Ron & Anke Cowan. We have made the South Luangwa National Park our home for nearly 20 years and pride ourselves on our high attention to detail which ensures an unforgettable safari experience.

We operate Kafunta River Lodge, a classic safari lodge and Island Bush Camp, a small personalized camp.

The Lodge is set in riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking stunning floodplains teaming with game. This classic safari lodge offers our guests style and comfort, while being situated in an unspoilt wilderness. With 8 private chalets and 2 luxury suites there is something for all our discerning guests.

The Lodge is in an ideal location to discover the game rich Mfuwe area from the safety of open safari vehicles or after dark, to observe nocturnal animals during night drives. Our qualified and experienced local guides accompany you throughout.

Our Island Bush Camp is in the remote south of the Park and this small camp is the ideal location for walking safaris.  The five rustic chalets have been built on stilts and offer comfortable accommodation with en-suite facilities. This camp offers a true African Bush Experience.

"For us, joining Project Luangwa is a great way forward".

In the past Kafunta Safaris has supported its own school projects. We have sponsored individual pupils though education and built a kitchen for the children at Mfuwe Basic School.

As a small company we struggled with the work load of running a business and trying to run a charity. We had taken some local community members on board but found that they could not commit enough of their time. At a later stage we had support of a German charity and Anja & Tay came out to run the combined project, unfortunately they could only commit 6 months of their time and we were left with the same difficulties after their departure.

For us, joining Project Luangwa is a great way forward.  We can give full support to the community even though we are unable to undertake the day to day running of projects.
