Toilet facilities at rural schools are usually of the long drop variety. None have any kind of running water so hand washing after a visit is rare. the nearest water may be at a well or bore hole some distance away.
Project Luangwa is aiming for every to have hand washing facilities outside its toilets. At schools where girls past puberty are attending we will endevour to place facilites inside the toilets too. Many girls take time off school every month as they are unable to wash after visiting to toilet.
We have designed a simple wash stand and a local welder makes them out of steel. the stand holds a bucket with a tap and bowl. Each morning the children take it in turns to fill the bucket from the nearest borehole.
Each stand complete with large bucket and tap, wash bowl and an bucket for carrying the water $30
