Everytime we build a classroom it is essential that we also supply desks and, wherever possible, we will provide 30 new desks for each classroom we build. That's enough for 60 pupils.

However every school in the area has an acute shortage of desks too. Often children are forced to squash three to a desk meant for two or must to sit on bamboo mats on the floor even when taking their end of term exams.

At Ncheka Basic School, for example, there is a classroom with just one desk. The two children first to arrive in the morning grab the desk whilst others sit on planks and the rest on the floor. This classroom is used by 83 Grade 8 pupils. This is not an unusual situation and it is reflected to some degree thoughout the schools in South Luangwa.

Project Luangwa has an open and ongoing appeal for funds to provide as many schools as possible with enough desks to enable every child to have a comfortable place to learn.

Why make metal desks
Deforestation is a huge problem in South Luangwa and in an attempt to reduce this we have decided to have "all metal" desks made instead of ones using precious hardwood.

The frames are made from box steel to a design first used by Chipembele Wildlife Educational Trust. However we have decided to use aluminium tops instead of sheet steel.  These desks are durable and last much longer and require less repairing than the old wooden ones.

The desks are made locally in Mfuwe by a welder who is able to make about four or five desks a day.  Each desk accommmodates two pupils.
