Classroom Connections for schools and teachers

Class to Class connects a whole class of children from one of our Mfuwe schools to another elsewhere in the World.

Our aim is to assist and encourage lasting and supporting partnerships between the teacher and pupils of one class with those of another in a different country. By twinning classes we hope that children of diverse backgrounds will help each other to understand their different cultures through correspondence.
Project Luangwa acts as co-ordinator between schools but it’s up to teachers and pupils to decide how the relationship develops. It may go no further than exchanging photos and letters, but past experience has shown that children in the West often want to do more for their new friends in Africa.

It is up to the teachers to decide if they want to keep it to just one class or expand the idea and get the whole school involved. Whatever your ideas we are happy to help and advise.  Teachers in South Luangwa are very enthusiastic about linking their class with another that may be many thousands of miles away.  Many tell us they feel remote and isolated but by twinning their class with another they feel included in the World.

School twinning is all about building a partnership: you can expect ups and downs, challenges and surprises. Be prepared for misunderstandings and delays; there will be differences in experience and culture and postal services in rural Zambia are much slower than in the developed world. Remember that teachers in Mfuwe do not have access to the teaching aids that are taken for granted in the West and many schools do not have electricity.

Be prepared to work at sustainability: maintain enthusiasm by telling everyone about your project and try to get it incorporated into the curriculum. Think how it can be included into lessons; geography, environmental studies, English language and letter writing, biology, natural history and social studies.

We advise that teachers who are unfamiliar with the Zambian education system take a little time to read about it here when planning to twin with a Zambian school.

At Project Luangwa we make no charge for acting as co-ordinator between schools, however as a charity we appreciate a donation towards the cost of posting correspondence from Zambia. It goes without saying that the schools here are unable to afford international postage costs.
